When I graduated from 6th grade, I commented that the year had flown by. My dad said, “Wait til you’re my age, they really fly by.” Every year, as the new year approaches, I recall my dad’s words and realize that each year does seem to pass more quickly than the last.
It is also the time of year that I think about resolutions. Will I make one? If I do, will I keep it? Historically, I make one and blow it by the end of January. So, what’s the point?
This year, I decided to change my approach. I thought about what my dad said and decided to take some time to reflect on all that happened in 2011 vs. what I planned to accomplish in 2012. I actually opened an Excel spreadsheet and month by month, listed the highlights. Yes, maybe a bit much, but it was beneficial to see it in black and white.
Overall, a lot of positive things happened in 2011 and it was fun to remember them and they impacted me and others. Although I have always been extremely grateful for my friends and family, this exercise reinforced how lucky I am to blessed with great people in my life. There were a few lows and I “resolved” not to repeat them in 2012. Hopefully, I’ll be successful.
As you begin 2012, I hope that you take some time to reflect on 2011. If you make a resolution, I wish you success in following through. I hope 2012 will be a great year for all of us and that we all appreciate each day and experience.
